A crew of African American pilots in the Tuskegee training program, having faced segregation while kept mostly on the ground during World War II, are called into duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard.
Italy, 1944. As the war takes its toll on Allied forces in Europe, a squadron of black pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen are finally given the chance to prove themselves in the sky - even as they battle discrimination on the ground. It's a tribute to the unsung heroes who rose above extraordinary challenges and ultimately soared into history.
This is a BS movie but very well done BS. The flying and combat effects are superb. I assume most of them were computer generated and was surprised to find nothing about that on the IMDb page.There can't be that many airworthy WW2 fighters left in existence, especially the Luftwaffe's ME-262 jet fighter. However the plot is simplistic and artificial and the movie is yet another Hollywood production specifically targeted at black audiences. Even that is okay to a point if it's an accurate portrayal. But men going into combat in fighter planes don't joke and clown. Despite the excellent effects, the whole movie has a sort of "Hey gang, let's put on a war" feel to it. I don't know all the history involved but given the unlikely tone of this movie, I'm certain that it has only the slimmest connection to reality.
I am stealing the first line of another review as it sums up much of my impression: &quot;Weak story-line, one dimensional characters, cheesy dialog, cheap looking CGI, and an out of place love story all make up this lousy movie.&quot; I would back off the word lousy and use some other phrase like, less than mediocre.<br/><br/>Cheesy is another word. It just lacked any semblance of continuity. Odd love story inserted into odd vignettes. Sub plots that just went no where. I can&#39;t blame the actors because it is very hard to work with a crummy script. And yes, it was a crummy script.<br/><br/>I have had the opportunity to meet several of the pilots from the Tuskegee Airmen, several times. To hear real stories from the real pilots who did real things. Admit it messes up a movie experience. But will say the movie was just not very good. Mediocre. Uneven. Poorly written. Big sigh…
As long as it stays in the air, Red Tails is a compelling sky-war pageant of a movie. On the ground, it's a far shakier experience: dutiful and prosaic, with thinly scripted episodes that don't add up to a satisfying story.
The movie is inspired by the real-life adventures of the first African-American combat unit to serve in World War II.
